Acetic acid for industrial production is mainly obtained by fermentation. First, ethanol is oxidized to acetaldehyde by yeast, and then acetaldehyde is further oxidized to acetic acid under the action of acetic acid bacteria.

Acetic acid can be obtained in the laboratory by oxidizing ethanol with an oxidizing agent.
