Diethanolamine is an important corrosion inhibitor used in boiler water treatment, automotive engine coolant, drilling and cutting oils, and various other lubricants.

It is also used in natural gas as an absorber for purifying acidic gases.

It is used as an emulsifier in various cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
