1. Sodium nitrite (NaNO2) is a chemical compound commonly used in fertilizers, food preservatives, smoke bombs, as a color fixative, dyes and pyrotechnics.
2. The main use of sodium nitrite is for the industrial production of organonitrogen compounds.   It is a reagent for conversion of amines into diazo compounds.
3. Sodium nitrite can be used as part of an intravenous mixture to treat cyanide poisoning.  It is well known for its role in inhibiting the growth of Clostridium botulinum spores in refrigerated meats.
